اشعه ماورای بنفش نور خورشید به سه دسته UVB ، UVA و UVC با طول موجهای مختلف تقسیمبندی میشود. حدود 95 درصد اشعه ماورای بنفش خورشید که به سطح زمین میرسد، از نوع UVA است.

بر اساس شاخصههای موجود، میزان اشعه فرابنفش به پنج بخش تقسیم میشود که 1 تا 2 آن بیخطر، 3 تا 5 کمخطر، 6 تا 7 خطر زیاد، 8 تا 10 خطر بسیار زیاد و 11 به بالا خطر بسیار شدید است. مقدار این شاخص در زمانهای مختلف روز متفاوت است.
