پالای شنی تند در اواخر قرن نوزدهم بکار گرفته شد و اولین بار در سال 1885 در ایالات متحده آمریکا نصب گردید. پس از آن این نوع فن آوری بهسازی آب در کشورهای صنعتی، مورد توجه قرار گرفت. در حال حاضر دو نوع پالای شنی تند مورد استفاده است یکی صافی شنی تند که با قوه ثقل، جاذبه کار میکند ونوع دوم صافی شنی تند که با فشار، کار میکند. در هر دو نوع پالایه مراحل انعقاد، اختلاط و لخته سازی، ته نشینی و پالایش به ترتیب صورت میگیرد.
