فرایند تصفیه بیولوژیکی مهمترین مرحله در تصفیه فاضلاب به شمار میرود . سیستم های تصفیه بیولوژیکی ، محیطهای زنده باکتریایی هستند که با مصرف مواد مغذی فاضلاب ، آلودگی آنرا از بین میبرند. نقش یک واحد تصفیه بیولوژیکی در واقع فراهم نمودن شرایطی مناسب برای رشد بیولوژیکی باکتریها جهت حذف الودگی است . در واقع موجودات زنده تحت عنوان میکرواورگانیسم ها مواد آلاینده را به عنوان ماده غذایی استفاده می کنند و باعث تصفیه آب یا فاضلاب میشوند .
که در این نوع فرایند تصفیه دو روش وجود دارد :
-روش هوازی : در این روش مواد آلی موجود را با کمک اکسیژن آزادی که در آب وجود دارد (که تامین اکسیژن مورد نیاز می تواند توسط هواده های سطحی ویا عمقی صورت پذیرد ) تجزیه می کنند .
-روش بی هوازی : در این روش مواد آلی را با کمک اکسیژن ترکیبی مانند نیترات وسولفات تجزیه می کنند .
